Tribe Tributes Interview Series: Andrea Scher

Andrea Scher is a mama, artist and coach. She designs soulful journeys and natural gemstone jewelry. She writes reflections about interior geographies and photographs beauty in everyday life. She has a generous and playful spirit, fierce intelligence and a radiant heart. My life has expanded by connecting with her, and I (Melissa) profoundly encourage you to read her work, wear her art, and join her for the Mondo Beyondo online classes about dreaming big. Thank you, Andrea, for sharing your creative story.

ARTFUL REFLECTIONS
How did the arts live and breathe in your childhood?
I was like most kids... creativity was all there was! I painted enormous paintings (fearlessly!) and hung them on my walls. I arranged my tiny little mice figurines into fantastical scenes, designed backdrops for them and then photographed them. I choreographed elaborate dance routines to the Flashdance soundtrack and invited my girlfriends over to rock out with me. There were no limits creatively... such a freeing time!

How was the artist in you born?
The artist in me was always there, and I suppose because my parents owned an art gallery when I grew up, I had a lot of permission to keep exploring. Art was given a high value in my house.

Who are (have been) your creative mentors?
SARK, Rachel Naomi Remen, the Lovebombers

Do you have a spiritual practice that informs your art and life?
My spiritual practice right now is being a parent. Breathing, walking, coming back to the moment as often as I can. I also practice yoga and dance NIA each week... one I use to quiet my mind and listen, the other I use to find my joy. Both nourish me deeply!

How do you nurture creativity in your daily life?
I nurture creativity by taking walks around the neighborhood with my camera in hand. I try to walk the same road each day and discover something new... for me, that is like a meditation. To see the world with new eyes over and over again.

PLAYFUL PROMPTS
What music is on your current playlist (what cd/song do you have on repeat)?
I am loving the serendipity of Radio Paradise and Pandora... and I have been listening to Katie Perry's Teenage Dream on repeat almost everyday.

What is on your nightstand right now?
earplugs, a huge water bottle, and a huge stack of reading material, the current issue of O Magazine, My Grandfather's Blessings by Rachel Naomi Remen

What is one of your (not so) guilty pleasures?
Lindt dark chocolate with burnt orange, Glee, Veronica Mars and Modern Family

How do you love to pamper yourself?
To pamper myself, I go to a woman who does intuitive massage. She works on your body for two hours while giving you the psychic download on your life. I leave there feeling grounded and clear about where my spiritual work is for the year, and truly hopeful about life in general. Amazing.

I'm a huge Andrea fan and it's a delight to read her words here ... I agree that parenting is a spiritual practice, also find inspiration in camera-walks, and share the favorite color orange!
